The heir to the crown of Figaro, his ascent to the throne would come at the toss of a coin following his father's death (see here for details). During the 10 years of reign, he would play pretty with the Empire, taking care to create the illusion of alliance.

However, Edgar was actually a supporter of the Returners, a rebel faction that seeks the Empire's demise. When Terra, enslaved by Kefka for her magical abilities, escapes and takes refuge at the Castle of Figaro, the King refuses to send her back to her former captors.

So Kefka threw one of his oh-so-charming hissy fits, and proceeds to launch an attack on the Castle with the aid of firey destruction. But Edgar, the clever dear, had taken precautions with his mechanical skills: the Castle is able to submerge underground. (... or should I say undersand?)

Located in the desert to the south of Narshe, the Castle is also able to travel underground to bypass mountain ranges, emerging in the sandy vicinity of Kohlingen. This function is discovered a bit later in the World of Balance, and can be activated by talking to the man in the Castle basement.

Edgar, though the head and posterboy of his kingdom, does not go unassisted in his reign. The level-headed Chancellor coordinates affairs when under attack, and the soldiers, though prone to panic, are loyal to king and kingdom.
